Friday 27 June marked a historic event at Lowther Hall: the unveiling of the official portrait of our immediate past principal, Mrs Carolyn Grantskalns. Celebrated artist Juan Ford was commissioned to produce the portrait. Mr Ford also completed the official portrait of past Principal Ms Noelene Horton AM in 2005.

Juan Ford has exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane and has received many awards including the People’s Choice for the 2010 Basil Sellers Art Prize and the 2006 Fisher’s Ghost Art Award.

Students from Years 3 – 12 came together for this special assembly not only to witness the unveiling but also to reflect on the process of making art. Individual girls were able to display their art work and describe to the audience their thoughts and ideas behind the process.

After hearing from our Principal, Ms Elisabeth Rhodes, the Chairman of the School Council Mr Peter Cannan and from Mrs Grantskalns herself, it was with great anticipation that the portrait was finally revealed. An audible gasp could be heard as the audience received the piece with delight and awe.

We are delighted to have been able to celebrate Mrs Grantskalns’ time with us in this way and her portrait will always be displayed as a reminder of our respect and gratitude for her.
