Teaching & Learning
Curriculum
The breadth and variety of the curriculum and the way it is delivered are key
features of a Lowther Hall education. We aim to combine the best of the traditional
pedagogy with innovation. The teachers are the guides, directors, leaders, supporters
and instructors. Yet at Lowther Hall we also emphasise student-centred learning
where each girl takes responsibility for her own learning, while working in a
cooperative and interdependent style within the classroom.
The students experience the Arts, the Sciences, Mathematics and English, the
Humanities, Languages (French, German, Japanese), Philosophy and Religious Studies,
Physical and Health Education and Technology. From Preparatory level to Year 8 the
curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant. From Year 8 onwards there are additional
programs which supplement the academic learning and there is increasing choice of
subjects. In Year 10 there is particular emphasis on Careers Education, in
preparation for the Victorian Certificate of Education studies in Years 11 and 12,
where an even wider choice of subjects is offered. Pleasing examination results and
our students' record of entry to tertiary education and careers testify to Lowther
Hall's strong academic tradition.
Students are above all encouraged and assisted to do their best, whatever their
level of achievement might be.
Modern facilities including a purpose built Junior School, the Learning Resource Centre
of computers and libraries, well equipped science laboratories, art, music,
theatre and drama rooms, a lecture theatre and auditorium are enjoyed by students
and staff alike.
