Learning Strategies

The primary years are vital to the development of foundation skills that underpin academic success. As part of our commitment to personalised learning, we tailor an individualised program that enables each girl to flourish academically, especially across key areas such as literacy and numeracy.


Within every classroom, our experienced teachers deliver a differentiated curriculum that takes into account the unique abilities and learning needs of every individual student. Our teachers are experts in this area and participate in regular professional development specifically focussed on delivering best-practice differentiated learning. In addition, our experienced Blinkbonnie team works together to determine the strengths and unique learning challenges for each student, via a combination of academic assessment and teacher appraisal/observation. 


For students requiring academic support or enrichment, a personalised program is created around the point of need and its delivery is overseen by our dedicated Learning Strategies Coordinator. In Blinkbonnie House we offer small group intervention programs for students at Year 1 in English (MiniLit – Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy) and Mathematics (EMU - Extending Mathematical Understanding) which run for a semester.

MiniLit is a research-based intervention program developed by Professor Kevin Wheldall, Dr Robyn Wheldall and Iain Rothwell of Macquarie University. The MiniLit program has been shown to be effective in raising performance levels in reading and related skills. It is a small group intervention program which incorporates sound and word activities, text reading and story book reading. 

EMU is a research-based intervention program developed by Dr Ann Gervasoni of the Australian Catholic University in association with the Early Numeracy Research Project. The EMU program has been shown by detailed research to improve children’s learning and confidence with mathematics. It is a small group intervention program which incorporates learning activities to target counting, place value and problem solving in addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. 

Our English and Mathematics Coordinators work closely with the Deputy Head of Early Years to develop programs to meet the needs of students requiring enrichment.
